GCSE Description

GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. It's an academic qualification that students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland take at the end of Year 11. 
What are GCSEs? 
  • GCSEs are highly valued by schools, colleges, and employers
  • They are available in more than 60 subjects and vocational areas
  • They are usually studied full-time at school or college
  • They are assessed mainly on written exams and coursework
What subjects are studied for GCSEs? 
  • Some subjects are compulsory, including English Literature, English Language, Maths, and Science
  • Some schools may enforce additional compulsory subjects in the fields of humanities, foreign languages, or arts and design
 
When are GCSEs taken?
  • Most pupils start studying for their GCSEs in year 10
  • They usually study for their GCSEs for two years
