Yes! At To the Tutors, we understand that students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs often face challenges that go far beyond the classroom. Anxiety, low mood, trauma, emotional regulation difficulties, and behavioural struggles can all affect a young person’s ability to learn and thrive in school.
We are not therapists, but we use a therapeutic education approach designed specifically to support students who need more than just academic help.
What We Offer SEMH Learners
1. Safe, Non-Judgemental Relationships
We build strong, trusting connections with students. Many SEMH learners have had difficult experiences with school or adults. We earn their trust by showing consistency, kindness, and genuine respect.
2. Calm, Flexible Learning Environments
Our sessions are tailored to the student’s emotional state on the day. If they’re dysregulated or overwhelmed, we slow down. If they’re ready to focus, we move forward. Learning happens best when the student feels safe and heard.
3. Emotional Awareness and Regulation Support
Our tutors are trained to spot signs of distress or dysregulation. We integrate emotional check-ins, grounding techniques, and calm communication strategies to help students manage their feelings while learning.
4. Focus on Self-Esteem and Confidence
SEMH students often carry shame or fear around learning. We focus on small, achievable steps and celebrate every win, rebuilding confidence without pressure.
5. Individualised, Strength-Based Teaching
We adapt our teaching to each student’s pace and needs, always looking for strengths to build on. Our goal is to help them see themselves as capable and valued.
6. Consistency and Predictability
Many SEMH learners thrive with routine and reliable relationships. We provide regular, stable sessions that help students feel secure and supported.
